Advantages of CAN and LIN in Networked Embedded Systems
Despite the fact that the CAN and LIN protocols are synonymous with automotive applications that mandate robust and economical network links, system engineers often overlook them for industrial or consumer applications. Yet wherever RS-232, RS-485/422, or even SPI and I2C are used, there is an opportunity to make improvements by switching to CAN and LIN technologies. This session explains why CAN is a fundamental solution in the automotive market that should be applied in other embedded markets. The session also discusses why LIN has become a preferred networking technique in many white-goods products such as washers and refrigerators. Beyond that background, this session describes how CAN and LIN work, then provides design insights that make it easy to implement either of these networking technologies in a system, as easy as using a UART. |
