MCU Performance Requirements for Control Algorithms for BLDC Motors

Permanent-magnet brushless DC (BLDC) electric motors are replacing induction motors in many situations, particularly in mid- to low-power (<1 hp) applications. The challenge for engineers implementing a speed control method with a microcontroller is to select the optimum control algorithm and the best MCU to run it. This session analyzes seven applicable algorithms, from basic to advanced: two 6-step trapezoidal methods, two sinusoidal control approaches, and three vector control techniques, including sensorless ones. All of these algorithms have been implemented on Renesas MCUs and their performance has been measured in laboratory tests. The presentation discusses in detail the results of those tests in terms of CPU bandwidth, peripheral resources and performance optimization.
